Murder probe launched after woman in her 80s dies

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a woman in her 80s.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the woman was found dead in a property in the Ashton area, near Helston in Cornwall, at about 00:00 BST on Friday. Her next of kin have been informed and a murder investigation has been launched.

The arrested man, who is 36 and from Penzance, remains in custody and police are conducting enquiries at the scene.

Det Insp Pete Gee said: "At this time, I would like to reassure the community that incidents of this nature are very rare but if anyone has any concerns, I encourage them to approach and speak to our officers."

He added: "A heightened police presence is expected to remain in the area over the next few days as enquiries are ongoing."
