A man has appeared in court accused of manslaughter after a man died in 2023, 10 years after being assaulted.

Sam Rees, 27, was attacked and left with a significant head injury in the Old Town area of Swindon. He needed full-time care until his death on 22 December 2023.

Abuzer Erdem, 40 and of Trowbridge Close in Swindon, was charged with manslaughter after Wiltshire Police reopened the investigation into the original attack against Rees.

At Swindon Magistrates Court earlier, he spoke only to confirm his personal details, made no plea and was released on bail until his next appearance scheduled for Swindon Crown Court on 10 July.

When the investigation into the case was re-opened, Det Con Jemma Humphreys, of Wiltshire Police said: "This is a tragic case of a young man who suffered significant injuries following an assault in Swindon and tragically died 10 years later."
