A teenager has suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash involving two cars and a lorry on the A1 in Northumberland.

The collision between a blue BMW 320 M Sport, red Seat Leon, and a white IVECO lorry, happened on the southbound carriageway between Stannington and Blagdon shortly after 16:05 BST on Wednesday.

Northumbria Police said a man in his teens, who was in the BMW, remained in hospital in a critical condition.

Two men and a woman were also hurt and have been taken to hospital for treatment.

Northumbria Police urged drivers to avoid the area if possible saying the closure was "expected to remain in place for some time", while at 05:30 on Thursday the National Highways said the road remained closed pending vehicle recovery and assessment of barriers.

An investigation is under way and anyone who saw the incident or has dashcam or CCTV footage from the area is asked to contact the police.
