'Labour leadership rivals circle' and 'Golden boys' on Baftas red carpet
PA MediaMost focus on Sir Keir Starmer's latest attempt to reset his premiership.
The Times says his speech this morning will be "pivotal", with allies suggesting he could include "a pledge to rejoin the EU's single market and customs unions in Labour's next manifesto". The Daily Express accuses the prime minister of plotting to "rip-up Brexit". The Financial Times last night he was "frantically rewriting his key address", as warnings mount he could face a leadership challenge as early as today. According to the Guardian, he's facing "a fight for his political life"."Deluded PM's last throw of the dice", declares the Daily Mail.
The Daily Mirror leads on what it calls Angela Rayner's "stark warning" to the prime minister that he must change. The Daily Telegraph focuses on the health secretary, Wes Streeting, who it says isn't planning to challenge Sir Keir directly, but is preparing a case for his leadership if a race is triggered. A source close to Streeting has denied the story. A senior minister has told the i Paper that the prime minister no longer enjoys the support of all the members of his cabinet - but cautions "be careful what you wish for".
That sentiment is echoed in the the Times' editorial, which argues "most of the probable successors would be even worse than Sir Keir when it came to their beliefs and priorities". The Sun says he's been "hanging on" knowing that "there is no obvious Labour candidate fit to take his job." The Mail's comment page says the prime minister's "departure from Number 10 already seems a foregone conclusion."
The Times says the Royal Navy is planning to spend up to £200,000 on a new uniform for female sailors. The paper says the current outfit is believed to have "inappropriately placed buttons", with a row set "in the same position as nipples." The Navy says the change "addresses issues raised by serving personnel regarding the fit of female officers' jackets".
And the Sun claims that Emma Willis is set to be announced as a new host of Strictly Come Dancing. A representative of the presenter has declined to comment - while the BBC said plans would be confirmed "in due course".
