Gotham Police cruisers and yellow taxi cabs have been spotted across Liverpool, a first glimpse of filming getting started for The Batman sequel.

The port was turned into Gotham City in 2020 for the movie starring Robert Pattinson, which became a huge hit when it was released worldwide two years later.

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman Part II will also feature Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance and is set to screen in cinemas in October 2027.

Official shooting locations are yet to be confirmed by the production team but various vehicles have been spotted outside St George's Hall and at Queensway Tunnel.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service understands this week's activity was part of a technical recce by the studio, rather than a full formal shoot.

It is thought principal photography will begin next month.

One of the most striking images to come out of the city in the last few years was the sight of Batman swooping down from the Liver Building, doubling as the Gotham City Police Department building.

It is the latest in a series of major productions to film in the city, including Sam Mendes four-part Beatles movie biopic plus the TV dramas Hamburg Days, The Cage and This City is Ours.

In 2025, the Batman spin-off Clayface was also shot in the city around Liverpool Crown Court in Derby Square. It is due to be released in October.
