Detectives investigating after a man was stabbed while walking through a golf course have arrested another man on suspicion of criminal damage and public order offences.

Emergency services were called to the scene off Newport Road in Stafford, at about 19:00 BST on Thursday.

Staffordshire Police said a 30-year-old man remained in custody after being arrested on Monday, but said the force "still needs help" to identify the suspect.

The victim, in his 60s, who had been walking along a public footpath when he was approached from behind, was in a stable but critical condition on Monday.

It comes as detectives also issued clearer images of a man they believe is the suspect - after images of a man seen holding his hood down while running were issued on Monday.

Police tape blocks part of a muddy footpath which has weeds and bushes either side. There is a fence to the right hand side of the image with a building behind that.

Police said the newly-released images show the man before the attack at about 18:36 BST, and have now appealed for details from anyone who saw him between the Newport Road and Highfields area of town.

Det Ch Insp Ian Fitzgerald said the scene remains in place and officers remain in the area to offer support to people living locally.

"Our investigation is moving at pace," he said. "I want to thank those members of the public who have already helped us.

"The clearer CCTV we are releasing today was provided because of earlier appeals, which shows the real difference the community can make.

"But we still need your help to identify the man and would ask anyone who recognises him to get in touch as even the smallest detail could prove significant.

"We understand the impact this violent attack has had within the community and that it can impact feelings of safety."

The suspect has previously been described as being in his mid-to-late-20s of average build and of Eastern European descent.
