A major phase of the regeneration of a shopping centre in Worksop has been completed.

The demolition of the Netherholme Centre - which dated back to the 1960s - is a key part of the work to revamp the Priory Centre, officials said.

In a shift away from a purely retail area, the new building on the site will host facilities including a climbing wall, indoor adventure play area and a bowling alley.

Work, which will also include public areas being renovated and the installation of a bridge over the Chesterfield Canal, is due to finish in late 2027.

The scheme to redevelop the Priory Centre has been backed by £20m of government and local council funding.

Julie Leigh, leader of Bassetlaw District Council, said: "I'm delighted that this once in a generation project for Worksop Town Centre is moving along as planned and on time.

"With demolition now complete, this paves the way for the really impactful and exciting part of the project – creating a new mix of entertainment, leisure and retail in a revamped Priory Centre."

Existing stores in the Priory Centre are open as normal and both pedestrian and vehicular access has been maintained, the council said.

New parking charges will start on Tuesday to bring it in line with other council operated car parks.
