Tributes paid to girl who died after river rescue
Ben Lack PhotographyA school has paid tribute to a 13-year-old girl who died after going missing in a North Yorkshire river.
Palwasha Akbar, who has been named locally, was reported missing at 18:30 BST on Sunday after she entered the River Wharfe, near Burnsall, in the Yorkshire Dales.
She was rescued from the water and taken to hospital by air ambulance, but despite efforts of members of the public at the scene and medical staff she died a short time later.
Bronte Girls' Secondary Academy, in Bradford, said the school community was "deeply saddened" by the death of one of their much-loved members.
"She was one of our star pupils and will be remembered for her compassion and willingness to go above and beyond to help others," acting headteacher Lyndsay Hall said.
"All our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and everyone affected by this tragic loss at this incredibly difficult time."
She said the news would have a "significant impact" on students, staff and the wider community.
"Our priority is providing support to pupils and staff affected by this tragedy, and we have measures in place to offer ongoing pastoral care and wellbeing support."
The acting headteacher said more information would follow about the school's plans to pay tribute to the teenager.
An inquest into Palwasha's death is due to open on 18 June at Northallerton Coroner's Court.
