A police panel hearing concluded PC Cai Scivyer had committed gross misconduct

A police officer has been sacked after an unauthorised chase ended with him driving into a suspect riding an e-scooter.

PC Cai Scivyer drove above the speed limit and mounted a kerb during the pursuit in Daventry on 12 April 2024, a Northamptonshire Police misconduct panel concluded.

The panel found that he then tried to minimise his actions and shift blame onto the e-scooter rider.

Scivyer, who joined Northamptonshire Police in 2019 after serving as an ammunition technician in the British Army, was dismissed after being found to have committed gross misconduct.

The incident began when the former officer had been told by a colleague about a suspected drug dealer riding an e‑scooter.

After spotting a man matching the description, who failed to stop, he began to chase the rider in a marked police car with lights and sirens.

Initially the former officer had claimed the man had suddenly moved into the path of his vehicle, but the panel found this was not supported by dashcam footage which instead showed the police vehicle blocking the rider's route.

After viewing the dashcam footage himself Scivyer had put his head in his hands and admitted "it was not how he remembered it" before accepting he had not made the best decisions on the day, the panel said.

The panel noted that following the incident Scivyer had pleaded guilty to the offence of driving without due care at Loughborough Magistrates Court on 20 November 2024.

This criminal conviction, along with the former officer's dishonesty and deviation from police policy led to his dismissal.

Despite this the panel said he had shown "genuine reflective remorse" and was "highly regarded by colleagues and peers".
