A man and a woman have died in a head-on crash between a car and a lorry.

A Volkswagen Golf, which was travelling eastwards, "appears to have failed to negotiate a bend" before crossing into the path of a Volvo HGV on Hall Lane in Wrightington, Lancashire, at about 08:00 BST, police said.

The driver of the car, a man in his 70s and his passenger, a woman in her 60s, died from their injuries.

Lancashire Constabulary said the HGV driver, who had been travelling on the opposite carriageway, had been left "shocked but uninjured" and was being treated as a witness.

Anyone with information about the crash is being urged to come forward.

Sgt Martin Wilcock said: "Very sadly this collision has resulted in two people losing their lives and my thoughts are with their loved ones."

He appealed for anyone who saw what happened, or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footge to get in touch.

"I would also like to speak to anyone who saw the VW Golf driving in the moments before the collision," he added.

Hall Lane, which was shut for several hours, has now been reopened.
