A 17-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital with "life-threatening injuries" after a police chase ended in a car crash in Greater Manchester.

She was a passenger in the vehicle that came off the road on Walker Fold Road in Bolton after it was pursued by officers at about 18:25 BST on Wednesday, said Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

The driver, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including aggravated taking without consent and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over the incident.

A 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were arrested for aggravated vehicle taking without the owner's consent and treated for minor injuries.

Police said they were believed to have been passengers in the car.

Officers started their pursuit because the suspicious vehicle had triggered an ANPR camera in the area.

The driver failed to stop for police on Kiln Lane before it crashed following a brief pursuit on Walker Fold Road, said a GMP spokesperson.

Emergency services took the 17-year-old girl to hospital, they added.

The car's driver was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, possessing a bladed article and possessing a controlled drug.

An appeal has been made by the force for any dashcam or other footage of the incident.
