Jenna, Will Howells and lots of other readers asked about Malcolm's use of the phrase 'chlorine bonding' in relation to the chrlorine-free VX gas in series 2, episode 5.
I've been holding off on answering this, while a chemist friend of mine watched the episode and suggested an answer. He wasn't much help though, I'm afraid, so this is the best I can come up with. It's entirely possible that this was either a mistake or an example of 'techno-babble' (a phrase used by science fiction fans to describe dialogue that's designed to sound scientific without actually having any real basis in science). However, within the context of the story, we have to remember that Malcolm is a very intelligent individual. It's conceivable that he used the phrase 'chlorine bonding' as a sly dig at the fact that no-one else in the room had the slightest idea of the gas's chemical composition.
Michelle asks:
'Who played James Crowe, the Red Cry editor in series 2, episode 3? I've seen him before.'
This was John Salthouse, probably best-known for playing DI Galloway in the first three years of The Bill. He also in the TV adaptation of Mike Leigh's Abigail's Party and in Sky One's football 'soap', Dream Team, on which he also worked as series producer. He's currently the producer of holiday-rep romp Is Harry on the Boat?, again for Sky One.
Rachel asks:
'At the end of series 2, episode 6, we see Harry on the phone while watching two people on his monitor. He said something that I've heard before about how 'the truth will set you free'. What was this quote from?'
This is another of Harry's Biblical references, from The Gospel According to St John, (8:32) -'And you will know the truth and the truth will make you free.'
Robert Owen asks:
'The actor Philippe Smolikowski who played Francois in series 2, episode 6 and who I think played this part 'magnifique' is not found on a Yahoo search either in UK or France. Assuming that his acting name is his real one, can you tell me where I can get his fact file?
Philippe Smolikowski is not a particularly prolific actor, but he is listed in Spotlight, the actors directory, which states that he is 6 ' 2", weighs 14 stone, and has brown hair and eyes. He's a highly skilled singer (bass-baritone) and his other skills include archery, fencing, horse-riding and sailing. He is currently represented by Hobsons International and is listed on their website.
Danny Boy asks:
'On BBC THREE last night the major was played by an actor who's been in something before but we can't remember what he was most 'famous' for. Can you give us his name and what he did?'
Major Sam Curtis was played by Reece Dinsdale, whose TV work includes starring roles in Home to Roost and Thief Takers. He was also the star of the film I.D., a tough drama about football hooliganism.
