FIRST INSPIRATIONS

Lewis and his brother

On 29 November 1898, Clive Staples Lewis was born in the Dundela area of East Belfast. Lewis' world of inspiration was fairly small and familiar to many of us - it stretched from the Holywood Hills in the east to the Shipyards in the west.

As a young boy, Lewis came to visit his grandpa, the rector of St Mark's church, Dundela. He lived in this old house and this is where the first image of Narnia comes from.

As five-year-old Lewis approached his grandpa's house, he saw an imposing brass door handle. This image made a deep impression on the young Lewis and eventually became Aslan the Lion...
