Performances of Sergey Prokofiev at BBC Music

Conductor Gemma New returns to BBC NOW this January with a programme of Russian masterpieces, starting with a work which needs little introduction, Prokofiev’s exhilarating Classical Symphony.

Glasgow accordionist Ryan Corbett performs Jay Capperauld’s electrifying concerto that was written especially for him and Emilia Hoving conducts Prokofiev’s enchanting story of star-crossed lovers.

Alena Baeva joins Delyana Lazarova and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as the soloist in Korngold’s filmic Violin Concerto. Bookending the concert are Dobrinka Tabakova’s exhilarating fanfare Orpheus’ Comet and Prokofiev’s lyrical Symphony No. 5

Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and the Oslo Philharmonic join maverick virtuoso Patricia Kopatchinskaja for Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto. We also hear Øyvind Torvund’s symphonic poem ‘Forest Morning’ and excerpts from Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet
