An Cuarchic

Cad é an chraic?! Is mise Conall Ó Máirtín. D’imir mé peil le mo chontae,Tír Eoghain, agus imrím i lár na páirce le mo chlub, an Eaglais, Naomh Pádraig.

Is mise Bláithín Ní Mhurchú. Is as Teampall an Phoirt i gContae an Chabháin mé. Tá mo chroí istigh sa pheil Ghaelach.

Inniu, an cuarchic. Más maith leat cuarchic a dhéanamh, seo an dóigh. Níl páirc peile de dhíth ort le cleachtadh – áit mhór oscailte go díreach.

Úsáideann tú an cuarchic go minic sa pheil Ghaelach agus tú ag scóráil cúilíní. Seo an cic is fearr agus is éifeachtaí agus tú cóngarach don chúl agus ag iarraidh cúilín a fháil, mar is cic ard é agus tá sé cruinn.

Anois, seo muid!

Ar dtús, cuimhnigh, úsáid do lámh dheas agus do chos dheas, nó an lámh chlé agus do chos chlé.
Coinnigh do shúile ar an liathróid.
An ghualainn eile i dtreo an chúil.
Lig don liathróid titim ar an chos atá tú a úsáid.
Tabhair cic don liathróid le droim na coise – an giota seo.
Anois, bogann an chos atá tú a úsáid trasna an choirp i dtreo an chúil.
Agus ar deireadh, ciceáil díreach fríd agus na méara coise in airde.

Maith thú agus faigh greim air. Maith thú, a Néill! Anois, cosa san áit cheart, ciceáil díreach fríd. Maith thú! Sin é agus arís eile, a Bhrónach, ciceáil díreach fríd. I bhfad níos fearr! Maith thú, maith go leor? Coinnigh do ghualainn i dtreo na sprice. Fíormhaith. Gabh siar rud beag, bain triail as - rud beag níos faide ar shiúl. Cosa san áit cheart, gualainn san áit cheart agus ciceáil díreach fríd. Sin ar dóigh. Maith thú!

Níl cuaillí de dhíth ort leis an chuarchic a chleachtadh. Bearna ar bith chun an scil seo a dhéanamh. Anois, tabhair cara leat leis an liathróid a cheapadh duit! Agus tá a fhios agam go bhfuil géaga ann ach déanfaidh mé iarracht é a chur trasna fríd. Maith thú, a Néill, gabh arís go bhfeice tú.

Sin é, fríd, maith thú, a Néill. Ar aghaidh leat!

Hook Kick

What’s the craic? I’m Conall Martin. I played football with my county, Tyrone, and I play in midfield for my club, St. Patrick’s, Eglish.

I’m Bláithín Murphy. I’m from Templeport in County Cavan. I love Gaelic football.

Today, the hook kick. If you want to do a hook kick, this is the way to do it. You don’t need a football pitch to practise – just a large open space.

You use the hook kick often in Gaelic football when scoring points. This is the best kick and the most effective when you are close to the goals and trying to take a point, because it is a high kick and it’s accurate.

Now, here we go!

First of all, remember, use your right hand and your right foot, or your left hand and your left foot.
Keep your eyes on the ball.
Your opposite shoulder faces towards the goal.
Drop the ball on to your kicking foot.
Kick using the instep of the foot, this part.
Now, your kicking foot goes across the body in the direction of the goal.
And finally, follow through with toe-up.

Well done and catch hold of it. Well done, Niall! Now, feet in the correct place, kick straight through. Good! That’s it and once more, Bronagh, kick straight through. Much better! Well done. All right? Keep your shoulder in the direction of the target. Excellent. Go back a little. Try it – a wee bit further back. Legs in the correct place. Shoulder in the correct position and kick straight through. That’s great. Well done!

You don’t need posts to practise the hook kick. Any gap will do to practise this skill. Now, bring a friend along to catch the ball for you! And I know that there are branches here but I’ll make an attempt to put it across and through. Well done, Niall, have another go to see.

That’s it, through, well done, Niall. Keep it up!
