Gambia

Gambia is a poor West African country that has ambitions to become a
successful tourist destination.

It has a warm climate and the advantage of being in the same time zone at Western Europe - from which many of it customers come on package tours for winter sunshine.

The trouble is that in a country where unemployment is high, tourism is seen as a good way to make money, and too many young people have come to rely on an income from being guides, fruit sellers, beach vendors and taxi drivers.

The tourism boat was so overloaded with people, it threatened to sink. Susan Marling reports on how Gambia is dealing with this, with sex tourism, and with the debate as to whether big international hotels or small, select eco-lodges represent the best future for tourism in the country.
