Unit 10: Discussing The Past - Part One

1. Dyma'r rhestr lawn o be' wnaeth pawb yn y gorffennol. Here's a full list of how you say what everyone did in the past.
Many of these haven't been practised yet - they're here for reference so that you can see how the pattern works.

Mi wnes i (I did)
Mi wnest ti (You did)
Mi wnaeth o (He did)
Mi wnaeth hi (She did)
Mi wnaethon ni (We did)
Mi wnaethoch chi (You did)
Mi wnaethon nhw (They did)

You add any word on to these to make a past tense.

Mi wnes i fynd = I did go = I went
Mi wnaeth o fynd = he did go = he went
Mi wnest ti gael coffi = you did have coffee - you had coffee
Mi wnaethon ni ddwad = we did come = we came

The "mi" at the start is there to show that it's a positive sentence.
There's no "mi" in the question or the negative

Wnest ti fynd? - Did you go
Wnes i ddim mynd - I didn't go (no letter change in the negative)

Questions

ti / chi
Lle wnest ti fynd ddoe? / Lle wnaethoch chi fynd ddoe?
Be' wnest ti gael? / Be' wnaethoch chi gael?
Be' wnest ti? / Be' wnaethoch chi?
Pryd wnest ti ddwad adre? / Pryd wnaethoch chi ddwad adre?

2. The answer to a closed question in the past, i.e. did you do something, did you have something specific is DO or NADDO.

3. There are always some slight variations in dialect. You can guess what they are more often than not, but don't be concerned about them. This course is about teaching spoken Welsh, which is as rich and varied as any other spoken language.
