| Part 2 - The Lemon years... Rattle & Hum This was the band's foray into the movie world with a partly live album as its accompanying soundtrack. Here they employed a classic rhythm & blues sound and enlisted a gospel choir for a new interpretation of 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' entitled 'I'm Sure I Left It Just Here By The Toaster'. Edge hair report:- Now almost constantly behatted, he has let the back grow long to compensate.
Achtung Baby A world apart from the Steve Lillywhite days, this is the album which fans either love or hate (or both). This release saw U2 incorporate the sounds of House music to their sonic armoury. Fantastic, colourful imagery, tight production, heart-breaking melodies, with only Bono's distinctive vocal to remind you who this band once was. It wasn't all good news, Adam Clayton appeared stark naked on the album cover. Edge hair report: Head now permanently covered by tea-cosy-style hat, but the long locks have now gone. Facial hair begins to grow.
Zooropa The band now embarked on a massive tour, called 'Zoo TV' and featuring banks of TV screens, European cars and a gold lamé besuited Bono with devil horns on, ringing the Prime Minister. The album's lead single, 'Numb' was released only as a video and featured the Edge wearing military-style uniform, muttering. Look, we're not making any of this up, honest! Edge hair report:- Now wearing a beret, a longer goatee and hiding behind dark shades.
Pop Critically, this was the least well received U2 album since their dance conversion. The band used samples and loops from other songs when writing this opus and the end result has been described as disjointed, or rubbish, depending who you ask. Still, who can forget the fantastic Village People-esque video for 'Discotheque"? Or the giant glittery lemon they took on tour with them. Not us! Edge hair report:- Cowboy hats and a handlebar moustache. Was the Edge trying to get in touch with his masculine side?
All That You Can't Leave Behind
A definite attempt to return to the band's glory days and leave all the fun, games and enormous fruit behind. 'Beautiful Day' was the bands poppiest record in years but was criticised for sounding like A-ha's 'The Sun Always Shines On TV'. Some people are never happy, are they..? Edge hair report:- Probably as bald as a coot by now. The hat is now pulled down well over his ears at every opportunity - perhaps he's losing his ears as well?
