Hi As my husband is a Stoke city supporter he is very keen to be able to listen to your match coverage on his digital radio. Please can you let me know if coverage of Radio Stoke is available on digital in Prestbury, Cheshire SK10 4BY. Thankyou very much

Hi I live in Hixon near Stafford. I have been looking forward to the start of Radio Stoke on DAB, but now it has started I have only got very poor reception. I have no problems with Radio Stoke Or Signal Radio on FM. From the article on your web page you mention the transmitter on Cannock Chase. I can see this transmitter from my house, is it active yet???

I have a dab radio that I purchased at Xmas. I have tried the autotune button several times but there is no sign of any of the new channels.. Radio Stoke, Signal etc... is this a problem that others are experiencing ?
I live in the Tunstall area and do not experience problems via FM.
I would appreciate any help you may be able to provide.

I am picking up the stations (apart from KISS which I can get on the Wolves multiplex) but I have to have my Evoke 2 portable upstairs to make this possible. With careful positioning I get signal quality in the 90’s but signal strength hovers around the 3 to 5 bars mark which is borderline for reception.
To be frank that’s not a lot of use when you want to move the radio around the house. Is the poor reception in my area due to the fact that the Pye Green Transmitter is not on air yet? If so will I have to re-tune when it does go live or will the same frequencies apply? Please advise.
Terry Edwards

BBC Radio StokeAssistant EditorTim Beech replies:
We're not competent to comment on transmitters - you need to see the BBC Reception Queries Page.
Our general advice to those with tuners who are definitely within our area and who can't receive us (but can receive others) is to suggest they try their autotune button again. It's possible that they previously stored national stations before the local DAB stations appeared. I know this advice has worked for at least a couple of listeners.

Can you please inform me when BBC Radio Stoke will be available on DAB RADIO? I listen at this moment on 1503mw in Nottingham or on my computer and I would like to know if I will be able to pick up your signal on my DAB radio and also what will be your new frequency will be.
As an exILE now living in Nottingham it would great if I could pick up your programmes without the normal interference that you pick up after a certain time of the day.
Michael Shore

BBC Radio StokeAssistant EditorTim Beech replies:
BBC Radio Stoke will be available on Digital Radio from 30th April 2004. You may not be able to receive it in Nottingham, because the transmission area will be local. However, we are expecting to have the station streamed on the web later this year.

Hi-Dear Sir/madam Unfortunately Stoke may (is) in decline, but Radio Stoke seems to be following it.
Your station a few years ago used to provide entertainment for its audience, regrettably now it seems to be just a government sounding platform. Get back to the people.
Many more mature listeners do not want to hear endless medical problems - they know about them, it is so depressing, you should be entertaining not depressing people! It is just a medical forum, WHY?

When"Plank" left and Kevin arrived things looked good. but now you have moved him to a ridiculous time.
What has happened to the excellent historical Barbara what's her name in the afternoons, this was good stuff.
sorry even my 89 year old mother puts the telly (sad) on now, you are losing it.

We used to have good interaction from your audience on tpoical local matters - notice how this has gone. Regards
Dave

Don't want to knock Phil Bowers as I know he is mad keen and gives 100% with his commentaries but can you ask him to try to concentrate on the game a bit more?
After listening to today's game it sounded like a comedy double act with him and Kevin Kent. I could not tell where the ball was on the pitch most of the time. Surely the idea of a commentary is to let the listener know what is happening on the pitch almost as if they were describing the game to a blind person
Numerous times today it seemed as though Vale were on the attack or had a free kick then in the next breath Barnsley were having a shot or had won a corner.
Also it was not clear who had been booked (or even if anybody had).

I know it is a difficult job and I would not envy Phil especially with him arriving late today and possibly not having time to settle but he does seem very unprofessional at times.
Sorry for the whinge as I think Radio Stoke does cater well for local sport.

PS Think the praise and grumble show would be better if it came on at 6 and went through to 7 o'clock. This would then give you time for a fuller round up of the games between 5-6. Cheers
Gary Latham

BBC Radio StokeAssistant EditorTim Beech replies:
Thanks for your comments. I'm sorry that you didn't feel that particular commentary didn't strike the right balance between drama and information. But far from being unprofessional, Phil is a bright young commentator and well aware of the need for proper description and ball placement. I would only observe that football commentaries (and commentators) can often be a matter of personal taste. As far as starting Praise and Grumble at 6pm, past experience suggests calls tend to decline as people make plans for their Saturday evenings, whilst the subject of the calls tend to become repetitive. We include considered match reports and interviews with all our clubs between 5 and 6, which still leaves at least 40 minutes for phone-in contributions. With mobile phones now dominating, it's generally no longer the case that listeners are struggling to get home before the end of the show to take part. It's a measure of the success of the increased interactivity between 5 and 6 that some now feel the show should be extended - however, at the moment, we feel that with Tuesday's Sportsplus and the Friday Football Hour offering further chances to call in, there is sufficient room for opinions to be expressed. It would also involve reducing the running time of Network Gold, which would upset the many fans of that show.

I have lived in Staffordshire all my life and I listen to Radio Stoke and I am a big fan of Television and Film themes, although the majority of my music theme collection is reference "cult TV themes".
I think it would be a good idea to have a radio programme based upon theme music from TV/Films past and present, from The Sweeney to The Saint.
many formats could be done, possibly incorporating local/national news items referenced to the time of first transmission of the programme theme and/or fashions/fads at the time.
Audience participation in the form of requests and memories that go with that time/theme could also be used. Regards
Paul Horton

Hi, I would just like to say that in my opinion the BBC's standards have gradually dropped over the last twenty years.
Reasons are in my opinion are down to who you employ, it seems you can have all the Knowledge in the world on a subject or topic but if you don't have a degree...
the BBC's disgraceful way of picking its presenters shows when it comes to the broadcasting, lets face it if you picks clowns to represent you, you deserve all thats coming to you,
certain presenters who work for Radio Stoke are very bias, I think you should listen to the founders opeinig words on Standards and Morals, it seem's to me you have let the Celebrities have to much time and let face it, they aren't the best of role models for our youth.
I want to say more about how your presenters seem to idolise people because they have got a big Celebrity NAME to them,
The BBC BELONGS TO THE PUBLIC so please serve us accordingly. ,

Day and date
I find this message board very informative but I was wondering, is there any reason why the posts do not have a time or date on them as I find this would be of interest to all users?

by the way I also like radio Stoke. But last week on Wednesday in the snow I would of liked you to of kept broad casting after 7-00pm to keep us informed on all the road problems on our way home as I think it was a rather unusual evening
Errol
Milton

The reason we didn't continue to broadcast after 7pm is that the Jazz programme is shared with a number of other BBC local radio stations in the Midlands which weren't affected as badly by the snow. However you make a very good point and in future, should we be hot by such bad weather again, we will try to provide coverage of the problems later on into the evening.
Sue Owen Managing Editor, BBC Radio Stoke
The BBC have got it wrong
The BBC have got it wrong, again. My trust in you has been lost; you have joined the gutter press similar to The Sun and News of the World which I choose not to read. Sky News and ITV offer similar services but I prefer BBC News as I always believed it to be impartial. This would seem not to be the case. One act which would restore my faith in you would be for the journalist Gilligan to be removed from his job and all other journalists of a similar vain dismissed with him. It only takes one loose cannon to sink the ship! Get him out and I'll trust you again.

I would also like to mention that I was disgusted with the walk out at BBC Midlands last night which was publicised on BBC1 late news. In order for the matter to be 'put to bed' the fact that you got it wrong should be acknowledged by all concerned and you should get on with the job you do best. Please, no more silly walkout but DO get rid of Gilligan!

Breakfast show on radio stoke
I would like to say how much I enjoyed your programme this morning.
We have refered to you as Radio Joke for a while now but Kevin Fernihow's suggestions to the Transport Manager from Stoke on Trent this morning were priceless!!! Snow ploughs and road closures being recommended to roads that are already blocked by stationary cars was unbelievable.
Keep these stupid suggestions coming Kevin, you make our mornings!!!

radio stoke presentation
Having just listened to some coverage on the breakfast show I wish to complain about the hectoring and sarcastic tone of your comments in respect of the gritting that took place yesterday.
It's about time some credit was given to essential workers who risk abuse and criticism yet work very hard.
The so-called Stoke spirit and character - friendliness, warmth - does not seem to be in evidence when bricks and snow are thrown at people doing an honest job. Where is the condemnation of those, presumably local, people who have endangered the gritter drivers? Where is the gratitude for people working very long hours, often through the night? Why is it right to praise only the ambulance service for doing their job and not others?
I was in traffic for three and a half hours yesterday afternoon, from Hanley to Cobridge, and I saw many gritters. It's obvious they get stuck in the same traffic as anyone else. I thought Steve Tams showed great restraint in responding to your rather inept, and bullying, questioning this morning.
So come on, give some credit, be a responsible and honest radio station and accept that there are some things in life - like extreme weather co ditions - that we simply don't control and have to respond as best we can. I look forward to your response to this complaint. Yours sincerely
Revd Rod Clark
Cobridge

I am sorry you feel our coverage was inappropriate. The presenters were reflecting the tone and comments of scores of callers and one of our roles is to give people a voice. Indeed, we received much praise for tackling the issue in the way we did although of course our handling of the subject is not going to please everyone. When the gritter drivers were attacked we were not slow in condemning the thugs involved and ran a number of interviews on the matter. Sue Owen Managing Editor, BBC Radio Stoke
why isn't the web more helpful?
I find it very unhelpful that you have the 1pm news feed on the web ....and that I can't tune into Radio Stoke over the internet. Also the travel news page - seems to be over 1hr behind !

I also looked at the Hanley webcam - great - it's actually upto date - perhaps having more webcams located around Hanley and other towns would be useful - certainly on an evening like this, rather than wasting (in my opinion) 3x webcams on Jodrell Bank and 2x on Radio Stoke's studios.

Stuart

The BBC centrally is in negotiations to ensure all local radio stations can be streamed on their websites, but there are financial constraints and it will only be done if it is cost efficient and won't impact on the licence fee.
The travel news is supplied by an external contractor and we are working with them to ensure a more up to date service.
I'm sorry you feel the studio webcams are a waste because they receive many hits and are popular.
The BBC does not own the Jodrell Bank webcams, but only links to them.

Football commentaries Sat 17th Jan
Absolutely disgraceful...switching coverage from Ipswich v Crewe when the score as 2-1 ( and finished 6-4 ) to Wimbledon v Stoke....fibishing a lucky, boring 1-0 win to the Clayheads.
If you say you are covering the Crewe game - stick to your promises - we don`t get equal coverage as it is !
Graham Warren
Oswestry

We were forced into the switch because of a technical problem affecting the commentator's microphone at the Ipswich-Crewe match, which made continuing with the broadcast from Portman Road impractical. We would have preferred not to have had to have made the switch and apologise if it marred your enjoyment of the programme.

BBC Radio Stoke City Coverage today a disgrace - jan 10th!
Can you please explain why Port Vale coverage was on both 94.6fm and 1503mw today! Both channels covering the same game?

As explained in response to previous comments about match commentaries, the fees charged by football clubs are now so high that we cannot justify or indeed afford to broadcast two matches by splitting our frequencies on Saturday afternoons. Generally, we will always seek to prioritise away matches, because the majority of supporters will be unable to travel. On this occasion, given the choice between Vale's 400 mile round trip to Bournemouth or home games for Stoke and Crewe, the choice was relatively straightforward. The contract between the BBC and Football League is currently being renegotiated and we hope the conditions will be more reasonable. In the meantime, we will split only when there is a clear editorial demand to do so

Comments: most weeks the featured game on fm or mw is the vale or crewe is this radio stoke or radio vale surely you could have a different game on each waveband?

As above - it's the size of the fees charged by football clubs for match commentary which prevent us from splitting our frequencies to transmit different games. Regarding the choice of game, we always try to balance the coverage fairly between our clubs, giving priority to away games.
Tim Beech Asst Editor BBC Radio Stoke
commentary
Could you please explain why audio match commentary of Stoke City matches is provided to the Stoke City Football Club free of charge for which the club charges fans such as myself a fee to listen to?

As a BBC licence fee payer I am annoyed that I should have to pay TWICE for this service. I understand the point made on your website that the commentary can be listened to free of charge on the radio, but for people like myself who either live outside the BBC Radio Stoke transmission area or in an area of poor radio reception this often is not possible.

The technology to allow this is widely available and is used by the BBC on other BBC websites.
I look forward to receiving your response.
Matt Smith

BBC RADIO STOKE WRITES:

It's not a technology issue, I'm afraid - nor does the BBC have anything to do with the charging. The BBC only has rights to transmit football commentaries on its own radio frequencies - we do not have the rights to transmit on the web. You will not find any football commentaries on BBC websites, including Five Live, which on matchdays streams messages explaining that they do not have the rights.

We are contracted to give a "feed" of our radio commentary to Stoke City, but that is where the BBC's involvement ends. The rights to stream reside with the Football League's website partner, PTV, who generally charge for access to commentaries on club websites. The BBC's role is a purely passive one.

Stoke City's webteam would doubtless be able to advise you further on their policy.

I do have one complaint though. Why is Miles only on once a month? Why not weekly? Is it because of his busy schedule, Radio Stoke? The new format for Radio Stoke is fab, by the way. It really works.
