Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli pipped Red Bull's Max Verstappen to pole position in a gripping qualifying session at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Pole changed hands three times in the final seconds of qualifying as Antonelli became last man standing, edging Verstappen by just 0.043 seconds to take his fourth pole of the year.

Lewis Hamilton was third as the fastest Ferrari, a place ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc, who had been briefly fastest with two minutes to go but crashed on his final lap.

And Antonelli's title rival George Russell in the second Mercedes was only sixth, behind Red Bull's Isack Hadjar.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris could manage only seventh and eighth places.

  2. Monaco GP build-up from 13:00 BST on Sundaypublished at 17:10 BST 6 June

At the hardest circuit on the Formula 1 calendar to overtake on, will this qualifying top three - Max Verstappen, polesitter Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton - stay the same by the end of Sunday's 78-lap Monaco Grand Prix? Or will the new regulations open up some gaps on the famous track for drivers to attempt a pass? I'm being slightly delusional here but we can dream.

If Kimi Antonelli can hold off the attack of Max Verstappen alongside him on the front row, plus handle the threat of the fast-starting Ferraris just behind him, then he'll stand a great chance of claiming his fifth victory in a row this season.

Over at McLaren, on their 1,000th grand prix weekend, world champion Lando Norris says he's already looking forward to Barcelona after qualifying down in P8. Oh dear.

Now that we know where everyone will line up on the grid tomorrow, head over here and predict the final standings. Each driver is in championship order to start with, but you can move them around to choose who finishes where.

We'll be back on Sunday with race build-up from 13:00 BST.

Lights out in Monte Carlo is at 14:00.

    See you tomorrow!

  3. 'Antonelli has moved on to a complete other level'published at 17:09 BST 6 June

This is what Mercedes thought he [Kimi Antonelli] was capable of when they brought him in to F1 at the age of 18 last year. Loads of people were saying it's too early for him. He did have a difficult time last year but there was flashes of promise from time to time and whatever he has done over the winter, he has moved on to a complete other level.

  4. 'Antonelli has good momentum behind him' - Wolffpublished at 17:07 BST 6 June

Bit more from Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports about the similarities between Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen: "Max was very complimentary about Kimi straight from the get-go and it [takes] one to know one. Look at P1, P2, P3, three generations, one still has to prove that he's coming but the other ones are definitely greats of their time. He was so exciting, it's been a long time since I've been excited because it was so close."

On how Wolff keeps Antonelli settled and still get best out of him: "Well you can see how he built it up over the session. Q1 was nothing spectacular but solid and then it slowly came. He just has the good momentum behind him. He's so young, there's this easiness that he still has. When you have such a positivity then these things can happen."

On the importance of Antonelli's start in the race: "I hope we get it right with the clutch tomorrow and he needs to make himself wide like a tourist bus around Monaco because if you lose the start or if you're not there it's going to be really difficult."

  5. Russell is 'robust and resilient' - Wolffpublished at 17:03 BST 6 June

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has been chatting to Sky Sport and he's been giving his thoughts on what he will say to George Russell after the Briton's disappointing qualifying.

"George is very robust and resilient," said Wolff.

"There were a few races that went against him, just because luck wasn't on his side or he wasn't there at the right moment. Here, I don't think its so much a psychological side, he just never had the confidence in the car.

"Qualifying started on a bad foot. Once you start to run behind the performance and you lose the confidence it's super difficult to catch up again and I think it would have been one session more and he would have been there or thereabouts but he didn't have any grip."

  6. 'My natural driving style doesn't suit the car' - Russellpublished at 16:58 BST 6 June

    George RussellImage source, Getty Images

George Russell, who will start sixth on Sunday, speaking to Sky Sports about his Monaco qualifying session: "Start of the year it was just easier, every lap I did in practice, qualifying, it was P1 or worse case P2 - every single session, Q1, Q2, Q3. The last three races, it has just been nowhere and even Canada, it was a real fight to get a decent lap and then I just nailed it at the end of both of those sessions, that was pulling something special out of the hat and a bit of luck to do it at the right time, but that is just where I am at the moment.

"There is definitely some things we have seen, that the changes with this year's car is, with my natural driving style, doesn't suit it as last year's car did. Kimi and I have had different driving styles. It was clear last year, it is clear this year. Last year it suited me just fine and this year, it suited him perfectly well. So I just need to adjust to this and I will do my best to do that but it still doesn't answer why at the start of the year, it was such a breeze. A bit bamboozled right now."

Kimi Antonelli has been amazing this weekend here in Monaco. I am starting to be stunned by his performances so far.

Imagine being 19 years old and you've put your car on pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix - that's the reality for Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli.

He has achieved his fourth pole of the season today and is aiming to secure his fifth consecutive victory of the campaign on Sunday.

Antonelli's race engineer Pete Bonnington is guiding him through his F1 experience and he told Sky Sports he didn't actually think pole was on today. "I thought, it's going to be close, it's not going to happen," Bonnington said, "but then the last couple of corners, he came good."

He continued: "We just make sure he keeps his head down, make sure he is working on the right things. And giving him the freedom to do what he enjoys; giving him the freedom to enjoy driving the car, so that's a big thing. And not stressing too much.

"Let's enjoy the journey but let's not get carried away with ourselves. Just focus on climbing each mountain as it comes."

  9. 'I thought we maybe nearly had it' - Hamiltonpublished at 16:47 BST 6 June

    Lewis HamiltonImage source, Getty Images

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who will start third in Monaco: "Congrats to Kimi. Mega, mega job. Having your first pole here is so special. We've got such a great crowd here, such a beautiful day.

“It was tough for us. We were looking so strong in practice and we barely changed anything, but the car was drastically different once we got to qualifying for some reason, so we have to take a deep dive into that.

“I gave it absolutely everything. I was as close to the barriers as I could be and what a privilege it is to be here, to be one of the 22 drivers in Formula 1 getting to do this still. I love every second of it.

“I think it is definitely very close between us all. I thought we almost maybe nearly had it and then Max put in a good time and then Kimi. I think it’s great to see how close all the cars are. I think we lost something going into today and that’s what we need to try to figure out.

"A big thank you to the guys back at the factory and the guys here. We haven't added performance this weekend but we are there in the fight but I am keen and looking forward to see what developments we bring in the future."

  10. 'Extremely positive' - Verstappenpublished at 16:43 BST 6 June

    Max VerstappenImage source, Getty Images

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who will start on the front row in P2: "If you would have told me yesterday I would be on the front row, I would have taken it.

"This morning, I think we had some difficulties with the car, so heading into qualifying and being up there was extremely positive. Overall, of course very happy with how qualifying went, how all the laps went, even though you have to deal with the traffic and of course the walls, but I'm happy. I'm happy to be on the front row.

"Tomorrow, let's see at the start. These cars are quite complicated to start. I have two cars behind me that start quite well but we'll see. This was a good day and definitely enjoyed it in qualifying.

"[The cars] are more on edge than the last few years and also with the power that kicks in, drivability, shifts, it's all a bit different. Once you get on top of it, you can get a clean lap out of it and especially in qualifying, flat out on the limit, it's very rewarding when it goes well."

  12. 'It was a magic lap' - Antonellipublished at 16:35 BST 6 June

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who will start the Monaco Grand Prix on pole: "It was one of those laps that we call a magic lap. I was able to put it all together and it was such a close qualifying with Max. I think the first run off in Q3, there was just one millisecond between us. I knew the last lap was good, I was just hoping that it would be enough but it was very close.

"I am very happy with that, massive thanks to the team because yesterday we struggled a little bit and today we were able to improve massively.

"I think this is one of the most intensive, if not the most intense qualifying of the year and it takes a massive effort, also practices because you just keep trying to get close to the limit. When it is about finding the last two tenths, it is not easy because the walls start to come closer and it is not easy to gain the confidence but I felt great this morning and I am happy that we could finish the job today."

On whether he thinks his age is a positive in not feeling pressure: "For sure, I am just enjoying the driving, enjoying the car, enjoying the weekend. That was a big step compared to last year, it is really nice to be able to enjoy the sessions and looking forward to tomorrow."

What has Kimi Antonelli done? He has outqualified Max Verstappen, the fastest guys out there, and delivered under massive pressure here. He has not put a foot wrong, the fastest guy in Monaco as we speak and what a performance from this 19-year-old, absolutely stunning.

  16. Antonelli on pole in Monacopublished at 16:21 BST 6 June

Isack Hadjar will line up fifth on the grid, the other Mercedes of George Russell is sixth - 0.394 seconds off his team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

Both McLaren drivers on the fourth row, with Oscar Piastri in seventh and world champion Lando Norris in eighth, and Pierre Gasly in ninth and Liam Lawson in 10th complete the top 10.

Charles Leclerc was moments away from another pole position in front of the home crowd but it just wasn't meant to be for the Monegasque driver. The rear of the car clipped the wall at Tabac in the closing stages and had to park up at Rascasse.

His radio message after his bump? It starts with "for" and ends in "sake".
