AI returns fraud; Airport drop-off fees; Supermarket loyalty cards; Mid-strength alcohol

You and Yours

Available for over a year

Cyber security companies are warning of a sharp rise in returns fraud driven by artificial intelligence. Fraudsters are using AI to create fake images of damaged goods in order to claim refunds from retailers - and some are even advertising tutorials online showing people how to do it. We’ll hear how widespread the problem has become and what it means for shoppers and businesses. Paying to drop someone off at the airport has become the norm, but charges are rising again. Edinburgh Airport has increased its fee to £8.50, making it one of the most expensive in the UK. We’ll ask whether passengers are getting value for money - and if the fees are here to stay. And while spending remains tight in many areas, health and beauty is booming. UK spending on skincare and cosmetics has now grown for 60 consecutive months. From premium moisturisers to viral social media products, we’ll ask what’s behind the spending surge - and whether expensive products really deliver better results. Loyalty schemes are becoming an increasingly important way for shoppers to save money - but recent changes to apps from M&S and Lidl have left some customers frustrated. We’ll hear from shoppers about whether loyalty apps still feel worthwhile, and ask what supermarkets are trying to achieve as competition for customers intensifies. A growing number of people are choosing ‘mid-strength’ drinks - somewhere between alcohol-free and full strength. Supporters say they offer the sociability of a drink without quite the same effects the next day, but what’s driving the trend and who’s buying them? We’ll hear from breweries and drinkers embracing the middle ground. Presenter: Winifred Robinson Producer: Kat Harbourne
