Jess swaps favourite music with singer-songwriter and co-founder of the Pet Shop Boys, Neil Tennant. The Pet Shop Boys have sold over 100 million pop records, but Neil also has a lifelong love of classical music. He played the cello as a child and grew up around church music, and he tells Jess how this influenced the Pet Shop Boys songs - whether that's pure vocal lines of Hildegard von Bingen or the dense harmony of Shostakovich. He brings with him music by Hildegard, a cantata by JS Bach, Lotte Lenya singing about September and a classic Miles Davis recording. While Jess has a classic Otis Redding cover, Shostakovich's Fifth symphony and a gorgeous slow movement by Prokofiev. To listen on most smart speakers, just say "Ask BBC Sounds to play Radio 3”.
