Tété-Michel Kpomassie, a teenager in 1950s Togo, is about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. After a heart-stopping encounter with a snake in a coconut tree, Tété-Michel happens upon a book in his local library. It shows him a land of ice and snow, 4000 miles from home.
