Feel-good favourites, hidden gems and fresh tunes to make you groove. DJ Spoony serves up a brilliant selection of soulful house, classic soul, disco, RnB, UK Garage, Reggae, hip-hop, doo-wop, funk, dance remixes, and much more. Vula Malinga is our Rewind Selector this week, taking us back to the dance floors and records that shaped her early sound. Born in Texas but raised in Hackney, she grew up immersed in gospel music and song. In fact, it was singing in the church choir that led to her becoming one of the lead singers for the London Community Gospel Choir. She first broke through lending her vocals to MJ Cole and had a Top 10 hit with Basement Jaxx in 2005 with ‘Oh My Gosh!’. She then stepped fully into the spotlight as a solo artist, releasing her debut album ‘VULA’ in 2008. She’s collaborated with Incognito, Dizzee Rascal, and DJ Oliver Heldens to name a few… And most recently, she’s been working as the Vocal Musical Arranger and Director on the Quincy Jones Orchestral project birthed from the BBC Proms series in 2015, with Jules Buckley, as well as directing the vocalists as featured on the ‘Ibiza Classics’ with legendary UK dance DJ Pete Tong. Vula also lead the six-person vocal team for the successful BBC Northern Proms in July 2023 and was a featured artist in 2024’s BBC Disco Proms. She joins us ahead of playing four shows at Ronnie Scott’s in London, in the coming few months... Our genial host also wraps things up with a ‘Midnight Feast’ track. Think big production, lush orchestration, and the best voices in the business! To get in touch with the show text 88291, WhatsApp 08000 288 291 or e-mail spoony@bbc.co.uk.
