It's the final week of visits to V&A East museum's inaugural exhibition 'The Music Is Black'. Tonight Locksley Gichie and Franklyn Dunn of The Cimarons, the UK's first reggae band that formed in 1967, talk about a photo of them that's on display. Frank and Locksley both emigrated from Jamaica as teenagers and met in a bus shelter in the London rain! They took the name, The Cimarons, after a popular American Western series. Early on in their career they worked as session musicians at Trojan Records, and backed many artists, including Jimmy Cliff and Dennis Brown, and performed with Bob Marley in 1972. They also performed at the Edinburgh Reggae Festival in 1973, where they also backed Nicky Thomas's performance of Syl Johnson's original, "Is It Because I'm Black". Their first album, In Time, was released on Trojan Records in 1974, in the same year they appeared on Top of the Pops in multiple performances including with Ken Boothe. They were also studio musicians and producers on Boothe's Everything I Own album. The band often appeared under aliases such as the Hot Rod All Stars or the Soul Messengers. To listen to all of DJ Spoony's picks of items from the museum search 'The Music is Black: DJ Spoony's Selection'.
The Midnight Feast track wraps up each show. Think big production, lush orchestration, and the best voices in the business!
