Limavady had the first hydro electric station in the province. It was built in an area now known as the Roe Valley Country Park in the year 1896 by J.E.Ritter and supplied Limavady with electricity until 1946 when it was taken over by the Electricity Board of Northern Ireland. It ceased operating in 1963. The machinery is still in position and the station can be visited by arrangement with the Roe Valley Country Park Warden. (Phone 028 777 22074)

If memory serves, when I lived in the area during the mid 1950s there was a small diversion canal with moveable gates that contolled water supply from the River Roe to the HEP station. Since the public had access to the area and the gates were eqipped with a simple winding mechanism, it seemed possible for mischief makers to interrupt the flow by lowering the gates. Did this ever happen? With what results?
