The Ramones first play CBGBs
16 August 1974
CBGBs became synonymous with the rise of punk in New York, though owner Hilly Krystal had other plans for the venue's booking policy (Country, Bluegrass and Blues). The club's involvement with punk (or 'street music') began when Television took up a residency in the spring of 1974 (part of the deal was that the band build their own stage). The Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith, Talking Heads and The Dead Boys followed in their wake; the only rule was that bands play all original material - no covers. Patti Smith played the final gig at CBGBs, in October 2007.

What is with the "all hail the sex pistols" attitude shown the other night? It's all a load of C**P!!!! I don't think Richard Hell got enough recognition for the role he played in punks creation whether it be with Television, the Heartreakers or the voidoids he played a major part. Where were Mc5, the Stooges, the New York Dolls , Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers,Jonathon Richman(roadrunner was a favourit on the sex jukebox!) the Dead Boys and the Dead Kennedys....a figment of our imagination? As it would appear the Stranglers and Stiff Little Fingers were! For some reason beyond me Patti Smith and the Ramones (who i think a great) and Blondie are THE NY scene and the sex pistols are the be all and end all of the uk scene with the Clash which are far better band a very poor second.....it is just not right!!!!!!!!!ps Why weren't Motorhead on the metal programme? They are the ultimate Metal band and have influenced as many modern punk band as the bands mentioned above ie RancidDoug. Dawson. Newton Abbot. Devon.
Would have liked to have seen a bit about Iggy Pop. I see him 1990 ish best gig i ever went to, made the sex pistols look like a bunch of Care Bears!. Doug.
