Les congés payés - paid holidays -
were created in 1936 under the Front Populaire (Popular Front) government.
At that time, workers were entitled to two weeks' paid holidays a year. In
1956 it was increased to three weeks and then in 1969 to four weeks.
Since 1982
paid holidays have been five weeks a year minimum. This is in addition to bank holidays.
Many French people still like to take the month of August as holiday, which often results in major congestion on the roads at the beginning and end of the month.
