Hotels in France

French hotels are controlled by the Ministry of Tourism, le Secrétariat d'Etat au Tourisme, which inspects them and awards a star rating , according to the size of the rooms, the quality of comfort and the services they provide.

The star rating goes from 1*, which is budget, up to 4*, which is luxury. Prices are not officially fixed but must be on display. You will be asked for a deposit - arrhes - at the time of booking, equal to 25% of the total bill.

There are alternatives to hotels, such as Café Couette and Chambres d'Hôte which offer French-style bed and breakfast, or the Fédération nationale des gîtes ruraux which has a large selection of country cottages to rent.

The website of the National Federation of Tourist Boards offers a search facility to find different types of accommodation.
