The local church is St. Luke's which was founded in 1331 and attracts a good attendance for the family service every Sunday. The church Hall, Village Hall and Sports Pavilion are all well used, especially as we have nearly 20 activety clubs and organisations. You'll find something for everyone here from the Arts Society to the Women's Institute.
Like many other towns in Devon, Newton Poppleford has picturesque thatched cottages some of which are 300-400 years old. I feel these beautiful old cottages add character to the village . Because of the exception quality of the soil farms and market gardens have always thrived in Newton Poppleford. The village is famed for the King Alfred Daffodil, which achieved the top award from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1899. Once it was recognised, 100 of the bulbs were sold for six guineas each. Working with daffodils then became the largest employer in the village, which sent the flowers all over the country.
The area still has nurseries and a fruit farm which has also won prime awards for its apple juice. A carnival procession takes place in Autumn with very colourful floats not just from Newton Poppleford but neighbouring towns and villages as well. The carnival queen and her attendants lead the procession, and the whole village enjoys a week of great fun while raising money for charity. Anyone thinking of moving to Newton Poppleford with children will be delighted to hear that our primary school is one of the top ten in the county. There's a lot to recommend our village, as we have 8 seaside resorts all within a ten mile radius, many historical towns within 15 miles, and good bus links to Sidmouth, Exeter and Exmouth.
What I love most about my home town is that the countryside is all around. We have the River Otter and Harpford Woods at one end and extensive common ground with a Royal Society Bird Protection area at the other. It's healthy clean and pollution free, yet all amenities including the airport are within an easy 30 minute drive and the M5 is only 10 minutes away.
