Nick Stapleton's advice on scambaiting

  • Published

Scambaiting is a tactic some people use to keep scammers on the phone as a way to deliberately waste their time - that way the scammers are not doing damage to anybody else and their work becomes less profitable.

The safest thing to with scammers is simply not to engage.

However, if you are confident using technology and spotting scammers and you enjoy scambaiting, Nick's got some advice to make sure you do it as safely as possible, although this is still a risk!

First, avoid text scams because you can easily slip and click a dodgy link that could download some nasty software to your phone.

Second, change your voice in some way when you're on the phone - either raise or lower the pitch, or put on an accent that's not your own, to help mitigate the risks of AI Voice Cloning scams.

Finally, make sure to tell the scammer that you know this is a scam before you hang up the phone, that way you won't be inundated with more scam calls.

And if you can, report the scammer to the National Cyber Security Centre, external, the Police, external, or the Information Commissioner's Office, external.
